Through the luminous stroke of a brush or the definitive turn of a blade, two artists in Chasing the Sky confidently pursue a connection with the natural world, its gestural movement and seasonal change. Jackie Battenfield's fluid paint on large translucent panels delicately note a natural world rarely examined within her native urban NYC setting. Jackie's paintings evoke the immediacy of nature's transformation, reanimating the twisting and branching line of a tree limb. Jennifer Falck Linssen's graceful lines in hand carved sculpture capture the disappearing wild, and how nature's change and hopeful resiliency can mirror our own. Her studies in bird migration and natural habitat appear as stalwart markers to a rich and diverse flora and fauna, and the essential connections between them.
Each artist draws upon the physical properties and individual behavior of their chosen mediums to create a new world all their own. Jackie observes the fluid and abstract qualities of the pigments and translucent nature of her surface, guiding each to reassemble in unexpected ways. Jennifer delves into the transformation of light and space - sculpting forms of pattern, shadow, and light, while recontextualizing the ancient Japanese tradition of katagami carving.
Translucence and form take on new meaning in Chasing the Sky, animating a sense of time and space. This exhibit at Chicago Art Source Gallery, 1871 N.
